10 Tips for Low Fat Shopping
10 Tips for Low Fat Shopping
1. Fill
your trolley with fruit and vegetables first.
2. Buy
low-fat milk and yoghurt, cottage cheese, and low-fat (less than 7%)
hard cheeses.
3. Don't
buy spreads - if you don't have them, you can't use them.
4. Spend
more time in the supermarket aisle with the pasta, rice, couscous or
other grains, and pass by the biscuits and confectionery.
5. Buy tuna
and other canned fish in water or brine rather than in oil.
6. Plan
meals around vegetables and let the meat fit in around them.
7. Buy lots
of interesting breads: rolls, flatbreads and fresh loaves in
different shapes.
8. Buy
raisin bread instead of biscuits or cakes (even cracker biscuits are
high in fat).
9. If you
need pastry, buy filo and brush with the minimum of oil.
10. Read
the label: many manufacturers now say how much fat is in foods.
Ingredients must be listed according to the proportion in which they
are used. If any type of fat is near the top of the list, beware. If
fat or oil is well down the list, the quantity is probably not worth
worrying about.
